Koalas
The iconic Koala is a uniquely Australian marsupial. Its young, known as ‘joeys’ , spend the first few months in the mother’s pouch; adult koalas dine on a very limited diet of eucalyptus leaves; they sleep 18+ hours a day and, at Cairns Tropical Zoo live a very pleasant life. Well cared for Koalas live longer in captivity than in the wild as their life has less stress and threats. In the wild, koalas need to source their food which, in many areas, is getting harder due to development, bush fires etc. Their life is often at risk from cars, dog attacks and the like.
Cairns Tropical Zoo is one of only a handful of places in the world where you can ‘Cuddle a Koala’ and we strive to make this a great experience for you and our Koalas. We do adhere to a very strict Koala Handling Code of Practise.
As our Koalas may only ‘work’ 30 minutes a day, and only 3 days in a row, we need a very large colony to be able to allow visitors to experience the magic of a Koala Cuddle. The cost of caring for our colony is offset by the $16 we charge for every person who wishes to enjoy this uniquely Australian experience.
