North Queensland Wildlife Trust

The North Queensland Wildlife Trust is a private trust established by the Freeman family, owners of Cairns Tropical Zoo, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures and Kuranda Koala Gardens. The purpose of the trust is to raise funds for the conservation of native species and the local habitats that support them.

The North Queensland Wildlife Trust is simple in design. Collected funds are not consumed by wages and management fees. Besides basic administration and audit fees, its outlays are minimal. At least once a year the Trust distributes funds to selected wildlife / conservation groups that have Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status.

Donation boxes are in key locations at Cairns Tropical Zoo, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures and Kuranda Koala Gardens for donations from visitors. To encourage visitors to make donations each wildlife establishment will match each donation - dollar for dollar.

As another source of funds, we ask our many ‘familiarisation’ participants (these are usually travel agents, or potential product sellers that wish to come and ‘inspect’ our various attractions prior to actually selling them) to make a gold coin donation.

This request also extends to our many ‘prize winners’ who are lucky enough to win a free pass to any of our attractions. During the year the three wildlife attractions host hundreds of familiarisations and donate over $30,000 in prizes, at no cost, or at a dramatically discounted rate.
